Las Vegas Mountaineers ClubThis is a trip to visit the Racetrack area of Death Valley, do a fair amount of sightseeing, and climb a couple mountains- Lost Burro Benchmark and Ubehebe Peak, two peaks that each have over 1,000 feet of prominence and are on multiple desert peak lists (not DPS). The plan is to leave Friday evening, and drive to camp near Ubehebe Crater. On Saturday, we'll get an early start and visit Ubehebe Crater (sightsee/hike around the crater). We'll then drive down Racetrack Road and get to the trailhead for Lost Burro Benchmark. We'll climb that peak (a short hike), and then head to the Racetrack proper where we'll sightsee there for a while, optionally climbing "The Grandstand". From there we'll head south the camping area and camp there for the night (this will be the night we lose an hour). On Sunday, we'll hike Ubehebe Peak, a longer hike, but one with a defined trail to the summit, before heading back to Vegas, potentially stopping to smell (and/or photograph) the flowers along the way (as we might throughout the trip). I have not visited the area, much less hiked these peaks before, so this trip is exploratory. Total Distance (Peaks only): 2-3 miles round trip (Sat), 9 miles (Sun) Total Elevation Gain: 1,000' (Sat), 2,400' (Sun) Altitude: 3,700 - 6,097 Terrain Description: class 1-2 expected (Grandstand may be class 4) Approximate Hiking Time: 2 hours (Sat), 6 hours (Sun) Please remember to answer the question after RSVPing.
